Welcome to:

Richard Cox's Internet Gateway to Sports History

This website is designed to assit largely academic scholars, journalists and anyone else interested in the history of sport to readily find information of value to their needs. It is a mix of pages compiled by Richard Cox and links to other sites. The site was started by the editor in 1994 and for 12 years was generously hosted by the University of Manchester. In 2007, it has become necessary to move the site to an independent ISP and as a consequence it has become necessary to introduce a small charge for some of the search services of databases such as the Chronology of British Sport and the Bibliography of Publications on Sport History in order to enable it to keep going. You may pay for these with your credit card via Pay Pal.

That being said, the vast majority of the site is free, provided you register as a user. A big advantage (and hope) of this new structure is that it will become more of a collaborative effort to develop and up-date. Trying to maintain hundreds of pages on a regular basis had grown beyond the reach of one enthusiastic but voluntary bibliophile. Now 'outsiders' can make links their or other's sites to this service by simply clicking on the submit weblinks menu bar. Likewise they can contribute individual pages if they so choose. Once submitted these will be help in a temporary folder until I have had a chance to check it out. One of the shortcomings of the old system was that there were forever individual hacking the databases or submitting nonsense over which I had no control. Once approved the new links/pages will appear on the site. This may take seconds or days depending when they are submitted.New items recently added/linked to the site can be found in the 'Latest News' section. Those added since 1994 are at the foot of the News section.

Many of the pages are linked to files from the old site which have not yet been imported into the new structure although nothing has been deleted. The migration from the old to the new style will take place over several months providing there is sufficient financial support to underpin the work. Altogether there were over 2.5K static pages and 10 databases. Subscribers will have unlimited access to everything. You can make your own modifications to the general appearance of the site and also change the language of the material included by using the option on the Users Menu ("Website Tools") .

Companies such as publishers, conference venues, etc. are invited to contact the compiler with a view to advertising on the site.

I hope you find the site useful.
